Post-Soviet borders in Central Asia have long fuelled land disputes. Arising from this legacy, Skylark follows Aibek, a teenager growing up in a Kyrgyz village beside the Tajik border. Raised by his grandmother Ene, he moves between domestic rituals and the tense rhythms outside. When Ene dies, he sets out to honour her final wish to be buried beside her husband. But the cemetery now lies in Tajikistan, across a newly demarcated border. Private and political partitions begin to mirror one another as Aibek’s coming-of-age is revealed through acts of division: of family, of land, of history.
