In the distant past, Léon and Elvira Berthelini, itinerant artists, make a living traveling from village to village. In Covarronca, pursued by the police commissioner, they are forced to spend the night outdoors. There, they meet Stubbs, a young Cambridge student, and together find refuge in the home of a painter who is at odds with his wife. In exchange for their hospitality, they show the couple that the love of art can resolve the art of love. Meanwhile, an unusual curse forces them to embark on absurd journeys into the 21st century, where the future of social security and a rock band are at stake.
