In the summer of 1949, at the height of the Cold War, Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika embark on an extraordinary road trip through the ruins of Germany in a black Buick, traveling from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Returning home after 16 years of exile in the United States, the writer is forced to confront not only the devastation of a divided nation, but also the irreparable wounds within his own family. Winner of best director award at the Cannes Film Festival.
