In 2007, Genivaldo Vieira da Silva, known as Geno, a former militant of the MST (the Landless Workers’ Movement) and the Pastoral da Terra (a Catholic rural workers’ rights organization), was drawing the map of his redemption: a small property in Santa Brígida, Bahia., where he intended to live out his last days raising goats, in an isolation he called his “paradise”. That is the story Eduardo Escorel documented in “O Tempo e o Lugar” (2008). Nineteen years later, the documentary “Semiarid Paradise” returns to Inhapi, in the northeastern state of Alagoas, to confront that dream with the inexorable passage of time. At 70, Genivaldo never took refuge in his promised land. Through an intimate dialogue, the film observes how the “paradise” adapted to life’s setbacks: from the severe droughts that forced the replacement of cattle with sheep farming, to the growth of his family, which carried on, through ups and downs.
