On the last day of World War II, in a small town in Poland, Polish exiles of war and the Soviet occupation forces face the beginning of a new day and a new nation. In this complex scenario, young soldier Maciek Chelmicki, a member of the Armia Krajowa, the Polish free resistance army, receives the mission to assassinate a newly arrived communist leader. However, a delay in his plans leads him to meet Krystyna, a waitress who allows him a glimpse of what his life could be and makes him question his mission. Andrzej Wajda portrays a generation marked by war, caught between the memory of the conflict and the attempt to build a new life. Winner of the Critics’ Prize at the 1959 Venice Film Festival.
Restored in 2K by Zespół Filmowe Kadr, under the artistic supervision of Andrzej Wajda and Jerzy Wójcik and the coordination of Cyfrowe Repozytorium Filmowe, from the 35mm original camera negative and the 35mm original magnetic sound masters preserved by Filmoteka Narodowa (National Film Archive of Poland).
