Established in 1994 to accommodate 10,000 people, the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi is now home to a population of 44,000. These are men, women, and children fleeing political, religious, and ethnic conflicts in countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Somalia, and, predominantly, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Living in extreme poverty and facing prejudice, the refugees are neither allowed to leave the camp nor engage in any professional activity. Faced with this situation of complete abandonment, four young men — Maick Mutej, Prince Kalolo, Felly B. Zihalirwa, and Frank Kabamba — came together to bring dignity, work, education, and, above all, hope to the people of Dzaleka through the revival of the ancient Ubuntu philosophy.
