In a Rio de Janeiro favela, where living joy radically is an act of resistance, MC Sabrina, a fearless and talented young queer artist, catches the attention of an influential music producer. Thrust into the spotlight of the global music industry, she must face aggressive attempts to “whitewash” her sound and identity — erasing her origins to make them more palatable for commercial consumption. Back home, her mother — a pioneer now discarded by the funk scene — looms over Sabrina’s rise like an open wound: a warning of a stolen youth, a mirror of potential failure, and the last thread connecting her to who she truly is. To become the voice of a new generation, Sabrina must fight to reclaim her music, her body, and her roots — entirely on her own terms. Special Jury Mention for Best Performance in an International Feature for Duda Santos and MC Nem at the Tribeca Festival.
