Born in Mairi, a small town in the interior of Bahia, Brazil, Aly Muritiba studied history in São Paulo and later moved to Curitiba. Unable to find work in his field, he joined the State justice system, where he worked as a correctional officer for seven years. A director and screenwriter, he made short films such as “The Factory” (2011), shortlisted for the 2013 Academy Awards; “Quadrangle” (2013); and “Tarantula” (2015). His feature films include “To My Beloved” (2015, 39th Mostra); “Rust” (2018); “Irmãos Freitas” (2019, 43rd Mostra), co-directed with Sérgio Machado; “Private Desert” (2021, 45th Mostra), winner of the Audience Award at the Venice Film Festival and selected as Brazil’s submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film; and “Drenched in Blood” (2024, 48th Mostra). His works have also been presented at festivals such as Sundance, San Sebastián and Cannes. He has also directed series for HBO, Globo, Netflix and Amazon Prime.
