50ª mostra > filmes > Black Zombie
The documentary reveals how a tragic metaphor for slavery in colonial Haiti was transformed into pop culture’s most profitable monster. Long before becoming a flesh-eating ghoul, the original zombie was the ultimate victim of colonial power, condemned to endless labor and denied even the spiritual release of death. Blending archival footage, horror film history, vérité scenes, and interviews with cultural historians, artists, and genre legends, the film explores this evolution through iconic cinema, exposing how colonialism, imperialism, and consumer capitalism severed the figure from its original meaning. This symbol of usurped freedom was reduced to a figure of terror, while Black spiritual traditions were distorted, spectacularized, and erased.
