

An Afro-Caribbean Canadian filmmaker, Maya blends history, resistance, and pop culture in her work. Her films have screened at festivals such as South by Southwest, Toronto, Hot Docs, and BlackStar. Her main credits include the short films “The Haircut” (2018) and “Why We Fight” (2021), and the television titles “LIDO TV” (2022), “BLK: An Origin Story” (2022), and “Farm Crime” (2018). She received Canadian Screen Award nominations for directing “LIDO TV” and “Farm Crime,” and won the award for producing “Patty vs. Patty” (2022). She is a founder of the Black Screen Office, where she champions stories that center Black creativity and power. “Black Zombie” is her first feature film.
