Brazil, 1954. What country was this where young, self-taught parents, both civil servants, named their firstborn son "Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza de Oliveira"?
This is the starting point of "Sócrates Brasileiro", a documentary series directed by Walter Salles. An affectionate portrait of one of the most fascinating figures in the country’s recent history, a football player with a singular biography, a trained physician, and a political activist. The five-episode series traces Sócrates’s trajectory and his deep connection to the social and political reality of Brazil.
The Mostra presents the first two episodes, which are still being finalized. Episode 01 ("Raio de Ouro"), by covering Sócrates's childhood and adolescence from Belém to Ribeirão Preto, with roots in Ceará, addresses internal Brazilian migration and the dream of building a free country in the late 1950s, interrupted by the 1964 coup. Following that, Episode 02 ("Ganhar ou perder, mas sempre com democracia") presents his arrival at Corinthians in 1978 and, from his encounter with Wladimir, Zé Maria, Casagrande, and Zenon, traces the epic story of the Corinthians Democracy movement at the height of the military dictatorship.
