Walter Salles

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1956. His first documentaries, “Krajcberg, the Poet of the Traces” (1986) and “Socorro Nobre” (1995), won awards at several festivals. He was a member of the 19th Mostra’s international jury, in 1995. In partnership with Daniela Thomas, he directed “Foreign Land” (1995, 29th Mostra), “Midnight” (1998, 23rd Mostra), a segment of “Paris, I Love You” (2006, 30th Mostra) and “Linha de Passe” (2008, 37th Mostra), winner of the best actress award for Sandra Corveloni at the Cannes Film Festival. Salles is also the director of “Central Station” (1998), winner of the Golden Bear and the Silver Bear for best actress for Fernanda Montenegro at the Berlin International Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar, “Behind the Sun” (2001), “The Motorcycle Diaries” (2004), which won the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes, “On the Road” (2012) and “Jia Zhangke, a Guy from Fenyang” (2014, 38th Mostra). At the 41st Mostra, Salles presented the short movie “When the Earth Trembles”, part of the feature film “Where Has the Time Gone?” (2017). In 2020, he received the Fiaf Award from the International Federation of Film Archives for his work in favor of Brazilian cinematographic memory. In 2024, he directed “I’m Still Here”, winner of the Audience Award for Best Brazilian Fiction Film at the 48th Mostra, the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival, and the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, marking Brazil’s first-ever win in the category.
