A portrait of a composer whose remarkable career traversed the twentieth century. While celebrated for his unforgettable film scores, Nino Rota was also a highly respected composer of concert music. In the documentary, photographs and archival materials are reimagined and woven together with interviews to explore the personal, artistic, and spiritual ties that shaped his life, revealing an artist who dedicated himself entirely to music and the ideals it embodies. He composed around 150 film scores for directors including Visconti, in “The Leopard” (1963); Zeffirelli, in “Romeo and Juliet” (1968); and, of course, Federico Fellini, in films such as “La Strada” (1954), “Nights of Cabiria” (1957), “La Dolce Vita” (1960), “81⁄2” (1963), and “Amarcord” (1973), in addition to winning the Academy Award for the score of “The Godfather Part II” (1974). If during his lifetime his relationship with music critics was often a difficult one, today he is reclaiming his rightful place among the great composers, having left a profound and deeply personal mark on the history of music. Presented at the Venice Film Festival.
