50ª mostra > filmes > Cavalcanti
Constructed entirely from archival footage, the documentary follows the extraordinary and complex trajectory of Alberto Cavalcanti, a Brazilian filmmaker who moved between Paris, London, and São Paulo, helping to redefine modern cinema in Europe. Celebrated for works such as “Nothing But Time” (1926), “Coal Face” (1935) and “Dead of Night” (1945), he returned to Brazil in the 1950s with the dream of building a national film industry, but encountered corporatism, prejudice, and political paranoia. Guided by his own voice, the film is simultaneously a reclaiming of memory and a reflection on who has the right to belong to the history of cinema. First worldwide screening at the 50th Mostra.
