

Šarūnas Bartas was born in 1964 in Šiauliai, Lithuania. He studied film at the VGIK Institute in Moscow, where he enrolled in 1986. In 1989, he founded Studija Kinema, the first independent film studio in Lithuania. He made his feature-film directorial debut with “Three Days” (1991), for which he received the Critics’ Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. He went on to make films such as “Few of Us” (1996), “The House” (1997), “Freedom” (2000), “Children Lose Nothing” (2004), and “In the Dusk” (2019), all screened at the Mostra, as well as “Seven Invisible Men” (2005), “Eastern Drift” (2010), “Peace to Us in Our Dreams” (2015), and “Frost” (2017). His films have been screened at festivals including Cannes, Venice, Rotterdam, and San Sebastián. In 2016, the Centre Pompidou in Paris dedicated a complete retrospective to the filmmaker’s work.
