

Born in the Philippines in 1958, he is one of the most important contemporary filmmakers of his country. In 2013, the 37th Mostra presented a retrospective of his work, attended by the director, who also served on the event’s jury, and screened films such as “Evolution of a Filipino Family” (2005); “Death in the Land of Encantos” (2007); “Melancholia” (2008), winner of the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival; and “Norte, the End of History” (2013). He also directed “From What Is Before” (2014, 38th Mostra), awarded Best Film at the Locarno Film Festival and the Mostra’s Audience Award; “A Lullaby to a Sorrowful Mystery” (2016, 40th Mostra), awarded at the Berlinale; “The Woman Who Left” (2016), for which he received the Golden Lion at Venice; “The Halt” (2019, 43rd Mostra); “Genus Pan” (2020, 44th Mostra); and “Phantosmia” (2024, 48th Mostra).
