The Philippines was forcibly reconstructed by imperial Spain through copious sex (what we now call rape), gluttonous appetite (what we now call plunder), and the promise of salvation (what we now call cataclysm). The 17th century was a period of incessant church building, and thousands of natives, especially males, died because of forced labor. These churches, created with deified grandeur, heavy stones, thick walls, and majestic high ceilings, are proof of the horrors of colonization. Presented at the Venice Film Festival.
