
Joel Yamaji is a second-generation Japanese-Brazilian filmmaker. He graduated in Film Studies from the University of São Paulo in 1978, where he is currently a professor. Yamaji has directed 17 short and medium- length films, focusing on capturing atmospheres and inner landscapes. Among his works are “Cafundó” (1986), which explores the lives of Afro-Brazilian descendants of enslaved people, and a tetralogy on death: “Impressions for Clara” (1998), “Never Let Me Oversleep” (1999) “Flowers for the Dead” (2000) and “The Wrath” (2003). “Hibakusha – Wandering Soul” is his first film centered on the Japanese-Brazilian experience.
