

Chantal Akerman was born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1950. She was a filmmaker and artist. At 18, she directed her first short film, “Saute Ma Ville” (1968). In the early 1970s, she lived briefly in New York, where she made her first feature film, the documentary “Hotel Monterey” (1972). Back in Europe, she directed her first fiction feature, “Je, Tu, Il, Elle” (1974), followed soon after by “Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles” (1975), a landmark of feminist cinema, made with a crew comprised almost entirely of women. She went on to make films such as “Les Rendez-vous d’Anna” (1978), “Golden Eighties” (1986), “Nuit et Jour” (1991), “Portrait d’une jeune fille de la fin des années 60 à Bruxelles” (1994), presented at the 19th Mostra in 1995, and, finally, her last film, the documentary “No Home Movie” (2015). Chantal Akerman died in 2015, in Paris.
