

Born in Novosibirsk, Russia, in 1964. Andrey Zvyagintsev attended the Novosibirsk Theatrical School before pursuing his studies in Moscow. In 1990, he graduated from the Acting Faculty of the Russian Institute of Theater Arts (GITIS). In the following years, he made several theatre, film and TV appearances as an actor. In 2000, he debuted as a director, making three short films for REN TV. He made his feature directorial debut with “The Return” (2003, 27th Mostra), winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He then directed “The Banishment” (2007); and “Elena” (2011, 35th Mostra), winner of the Special Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. These were followed by “Leviathan” (2014), which won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival and the Critics’ Award at the 38th Mostra; and “Loveless” (2017), winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and presented at the 41st Mostra, both nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. Zvyagintsev is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the European Film Academy.
