

Born in São Paulo in 1949, where she studied cinema, Ana Carolina is a pioneering figure in Brazilian cinema. She made her first short films in the late 1960s and made her feature directorial debut with the documentary “Getúlio Vargas” (1974). She went on to direct “Sea of Roses” (1977), “Heart and Guts” (1982), and “Dream Waltz” (1987), a trilogy presented by the 46th Mostra in 2022 in honor of the filmmaker, who received the Humanidade Award that year. She also directed “Amélia” (2000), “Gregório de Mattos” (2003), “A Primeira Missa ou Tristes Tropeços, Enganos e Urucum” (2014), and “Endless Passions” (2022), the latter also presented at the 46th Mostra. In addition to directing operas, Ana Carolina has also served as a juror at several film festivals, including Venice and Rotterdam.
