The Audiovisual Ideas Market, promoted by Mostra, reaches its fifth year, consolidating a format that honors its core mission: fostering encounters, debates, and reflections on topics that both inspire and challenge the audiovisual market.

The event will take place from October 22nd to 25th, at the Brazilian Cinematheque. As in previous years, it brings together panels proposed by industry players; the IX Fórum, featuring discussions curated by Mostra itself; and the already established Da Palavra à Imagem (From Word to Image), a space dedicated to exchanges between the literary and audiovisual worlds.

Introduced three years ago as a way for the audiovisual sector to support Mostra, the institutional panels have grown into increasingly dynamic platforms. Beyond simply showcasing company projects, they have become spaces for critical reflection on the market. Curated by professionals working directly in the field, these panels address concerns and perspectives that are highly relevant today.

Key topics include children’s and young adult content — previously explored in a Fórum panel in 2024, and now revisited through literary adaptations — as well as the challenges faced by independent distribution.

The event’s international profile also continues, with representatives from the United Kingdom, China, and Uruguay.

After significant growth, the Market has gained a new area in the Cinematheque’s garden, called the Encounters Stage. There, it will host more informal meetings and working groups focused on specific themes.

For the first time, there will also be a session dedicated to animation, featuring, among other highlights, a lecture by director Charlie Kaufman and an animation workshop for children.

Fórum, which addresses discussions relevant to Mostra and reflects the curatorial perspective of the film program, continues to be guided by its original thematic tripod: market, politics, and artistic language.

The first panel will debate the much-discussed internationalization of Brazilian cinema. The idea of conquering foreign markets gained new momentum with recent awards at the Oscars, Berlin, and Cannes, but the question remains: is this a realistic goal, and are the paths being taken the right ones to achieve it?

Another topic that Fórum will address, and which is mobilizing the sector, is the distribution of resources from the Audiovisual Sector Fund (FSA), as well as the tension between the principles of democratization and what some perceive as excessive fragmentation.

Additionally, based on a selection of films that use or address artificial intelligence, Fórum will explore the paradoxes and dilemmas of AI and its impact on film production, both in terms of audiovisual language and the labor market.

In another segment, Da Palavra à Imagem will once again bring a group of publishers to the Cinematheque for book pitchings, with the presence of Portuguese author Valter Hugo Mãe. He will give a masterclass alongside Brazilian cartoonist Laerte, both of whom feature in the documentary “From Nowhere - A Portrait of Valter Hugo Mãe”. Hugo Mãe will also participate in a panel on “The Son of a Thousand Men”, a Netflix original based on his novel of the same name.

With its different fronts more interconnected than ever, the V Audiovisual Ideas Market directly mirrors and reflects both the current moment of the audiovisual industry and the programming of the São Paulo International Film Festival.
