Juri da 48ª Mostra

There are many ways to celebrate the historic 50th edition of the Mostra. Discover the exhibitions and books marking this special occasion.

Exhibition “Time and Movement: 50 Years of the São Paulo International Film Festival” (“Tempo e Movimento: Os 50 Anos da Mostra Internacional de Cinema em São Paulo”)

Conceived by filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist Daniela Thomas, with scenography by Thomas and Felipe Tassara, the exhibition “Time and Movement: 50 Years of the São Paulo International Film Festival”, at Solar Fábio Prado, offers a visual overview of the five decades of history of the festival, directed by Renata de Almeida and founded in 1977 by Leon Cakoff.

The free exhibition is open to the public from October 4 to 29, except on Mondays, October 5 and 12.

The exhibition title refers to a phrase by Tomie Ohtake when she presented the artwork for the 17th Mostra: “For me, cinema is this: time and movement.” Over these 49 years, 11,692 films by 8,474 filmmakers have been screened at the festival, which has also fostered thousands of encounters between directors and audiences.

Book Launches

The celebrations of the 50th edition also include the launch of two books: “50 Years, 50 Posters: The History of the São Paulo International Film Festival Posters” (“50 Anos, 50 Cartazes: A História dos Cartazes da Mostra Internacional de Cinema em São Paulo”) and “Before I Forget: An Essay of Memories for the 50 Years of the São Paulo International Film Festival” (“Antes Que Eu Me Esqueça: Um Ensaio de Lembranças para os 50 Anos da Mostra Internacional de Cinema em São Paulo”).

In "Before I Forget: An Essay of Memories for the 50 Years of the São Paulo International Film Festival", festival director Renata de Almeida puts into words her memories since she began working at the event in 1989. The book brings together humorous stories and accounts of resilience, encounters made possible by the Mostra and important moments from her personal life. With a foreword by Walter Salles, the book is published by COSAC. Its official launch takes place on October 15 at Solar Fábio Prado, followed by a conversation with the author.

One of the hallmarks of the Mostra is its posters: every year, an artist or filmmaker is invited to create the festival artwork. Photography, drawing, painting — anything goes, with complete creative freedom. This diversity gives each edition its own distinct identity, now collected in the book “50 Years, 50 Posters: The History of the São Paulo International Film Festival Posters”. With 124 pages in a 31 cm x 39.5 cm format, the book features all the posters from the Mostra and Mostrinha, along with a brief history behind each one. Readers can detach their favorite poster — or several of them. The official launch takes place during the opening for press and invited guests of the exhibition “Time and Movement: 50 Years of the São Paulo International Film Festival”, on October 3.

Exhibition “STEPS Exhibition — Photographs by Abbas Kiarostami” (“STEPS – Fotografias Inéditas de Abbas Kiarostami”)

Abbas Kiarostami’s (1940–2016) relationship with the Mostra is long and rich. Since Where Is the Friend’s Home? (1987), all of his films have been screened at the festival, and he visited São Paulo both as a jury member and as an honoree. He could not be absent from the 50th edition. The exhibition “STEPS Exhibition — Photographs by Abbas Kiarostami”, on view at MIS from October 20 to November 8, features 60 black-and-white photographs of staircases taken by the director around the world.

For the first time, the collection and the short film Take Me Home (2016), created from the photographs and conceived to be viewed alongside them, will be presented together. On October 24, MIS hosts a screening of the short, completed after the director’s death by his son Ahmad, as well as Kiarostami’s final feature, 24 Frames (2016), which reflects his fascination with photography. After the screenings, Ahmad will take part in a conversation with Argentine director Lisandro Alonso, whose latest film, Double Freedom, is also part of the Mostra.

Archive (Acervo)

For two years, the Mostra worked to recover and digitize its database. The result is the Archive (Acervo) (acervo.mostra.org), a new website bringing together 50 years of the festival’s history, with information on nearly 12,000 films screened, as well as posters and records from every edition. Open to everyone for consultation and research, the platform allows users to explore the festival by edition, film, director or country, among other options, including an interactive map showing the geographic location of titles and filmmakers by year.
