LOCARNO 2002 - GERMAN AND ARGENTINEAN FILMS WIN THE FESTIVAL

12/08/2002

Juri da 48ª Mostra The German Film "Desire/Das Verlangen" (picture), by Scottish Iain Dilthey, won the 55th Locarno International Film Festival`s Golden Leopard. It is the third film of a trilogy about solitude in the microcosm of family life. This was Iain Dilthei`s graduation film at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg. The Silver Leopard was granted to the Argentinean film "Tan de Repente", where a naïve saleswoman in a women`s store sails away in a sentimental adventure with two punk lesbians. One of the punks` old aunt shows up and changes the rhythm of the adventure and gives room to a new family relationship. The Special Jury Prize was achieved by the Iranian film "Man, Taranehm, Panzdah Sal Daram", by Rassul Sadr-Ameli, about women`s conditions in Iran. A young 15-year-old girl is left pregnant by her fiancée who immigrates to Germany. The Hungarian film "Szep Napok/Pleasant Days", by Kornel Mundruczo, won the Silver Leopard for Best First or Second Work. The award for Best Actress was given to Iranian actress Taraneh Allidousti and the boy Giorgos Karayannis from the film "Hardgoodbyes" won the award for Best Actor. AWARDLESS 33 The documentary 33, by Brazilian Kiko Goifman, was running for the Video category but didn`t win any award. Arthur Omar, Brazilian member of the jury for that category, thinks there were good works, but no great innovation. Though unanimity was not reached, Arthur Omar reveals that the two awarded videos, as well as the Special Prize, were always among the most voted. They are: "After the War", a South-Korean production by Nobuhiro Suwa, Moon Seong-wok and Wang Xiaoshuai, and "Love and Diane", by Jennifer Dworkin, a Franco American co-production. The Special Prize was granted to "Un´ora sola ti vorrei", by Alina Marazzi. Arthur Omar believes that he was invited to Locarno due to the repercussion of his work, exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Two years ago, one of his films with Raoul Ruiz, "O Livro de Raul", participated in the competition in Locarno. Next year, Locarno might do a retrospective on his work. Arthur Omar was impressed with David Teboul`s video about Yves St. Laurent, showing the complexity of the operations required to make a haute couture gown, and, at the same time, following the stylist`s physical decay.
