In pre-war Poland around 1920, Bolesław lives in seclusion in a cottage deep in the forest, utterly transformed by his wife’s death. Only the presence of his daughter and a housekeeper keeps him from withdrawing entirely from the world. When his brother, gravely ill with tuberculosis, returns home wishing to make the most of his final days close to family, this unexpected arrival sparks an emotional rivalry between the two men. Amidst the birch wood, Wajda crafts a delicate meditation on life and finitude.
