Nineteen people with varying degrees of visual impairment – from mild myopia to total blindness – talk about how they see themselves, how they see others, and how they perceive the world. Notable figures such as Nobel laureate José Saramago, musician Hermeto Paschoal, director Wim Wenders, blind Slovenian photographer Evgen Bavcar, neurologist Oliver Sacks, and blind city councilman Arnaldo Godoy make personal and unexpected revelations about various aspects related to vision: the physiological functioning of the eye, the use of glasses and their implications for personality, the meaning of seeing or not seeing in a world saturated with images, and also the importance of emotions as a transformative element of reality – if it is indeed the same for everyone. Unusual images, of burning trees or the emptiness of the desert, connect the testimonies, which alternate between density, humor, and poetry. From the moment newborn Gabriel opens his eyes to an exploration of diverse paths and experiences related to sight, the film offers a moving reflection on the act of “seeing” – or not seeing – the world. Winner of the Jury and Audience Awards for Best Brazilian Documentary at the 25th Mostra.
“Window of the Soul” was remastered in 4K from its original 35mm negative. Image remastering: Marcelo Pedrazzi and Bernardo Neder.
