International Perspective
50ª mostra > filmes > Imperium
A visual journey through the vast expanse of the Soviet Union, built entirely from long-forgotten archival footage shot between 1970 and 1973 by Italian filmmakers. From the Arctic shores to the Central Asian deserts, from the Carpathians to the Pacific arises a rich tapestry of cultures that the Soviet state sought to standardize. The film begins in Moscow and gradually makes its way to remote villages where centuries-old traditions still thrived, revealing the silent resistance of these many communities in the face of the USSR’s often-hidden colonial dynamics. Without voice-over or commentary, these rare glimpses of daily life expose the paradox of an empire that projected unity while ruling over profoundly heterogeneous worlds. More than a historical document, the film serves as a lens through which to understand the geopolitical fractures and tensions that continue to resonate across the former Soviet territory. Presented at the Venice Film Festival.
