Mariana is a nurse who leaves Lisbon to accompany Leão, a comatose immigrant worker, back to his homeland in Cape Verde. Upon arriving at the volcanic islands, the man is not recognized by the local residents. Unable to return to Portugal, Mariana remains in the archipelago and is gradually absorbed by the daily life of that community. The work uses narrative elements from the classic “I Walked with a Zombie”, directed by Jacques Tourneur, to address the colonial legacy between Portugal and Cape Verde.
