February 2020, in Northeast China. Huang Yan, a cremator, lives a numb and detached existence, indifferent to life and death. Her routine is shattered when she accidentally mixes up the ashes of two deceased individuals, and soon after, receives a lung cancer diagnosis. Convinced that the illness is a curse from those two unsettled souls, she believes that reversing the mistake is her only chance of a cure. Yao Xue, the daughter of one of the cremated, trusts the story and decides to help her. However, when Huang Yan confesses the truth to the two families, the relatives refuse to accept the mix-up and decide to keep the swapped urns. The cremator then embarks on a frantic and absurd journey to prove the error and switch the ashes. This obsession upends her previously numb reality and unearths long-buried pain. Huang Yan and Yao Xue witness the profound beauty and absurdity of human nature, as together, they confront past traumas, rediscover the meaning of existence, and find a reason to live in the face of death.
