50ª mostra > filmes > The Battle of Chile: Part II
The confrontation between Salvador Allende’s supporters and his opponents intensifies in the months leading up to the 1973 coup d’état in Chile. Strikes and boycotts affect the supply of food, energy, and transportation, while the opposition steps up its actions against the government. Allende attempts to reach an agreement with the Christian Democrats, but the negotiations fail to advance. At the same time, divisions within the left deepen the crisis, while sectors of the Armed Forces begin to conspire against the government. Amid growing political and social tensions, thousands of people take to the streets in support of Allende on the third anniversary of his government. Seven days later, on September 11, the Armed Forces launch the coup d’état and bomb the La Moneda Palace, where the president remains. The second part of “The Battle of Chile” records the events that led to the coup d’état that overthrew Salvador Allende’s government.
