

Born in Konstanz, Germany in 1942, Ulrike Ottinger is a visual artist and filmmaker. An iconoclastic member of the New German Cinema, she is a lesbian auteur whose body of work spans across six decades. She made films like “Ticket of No Return” (1979); “Freak Orlando” (1981), presented at the 7th Mostra; and “Dorian Gray in the Mirror of the Yellow Press” (1984). Over the past thirty years, Ottinger also focused on nonfiction, with ethnographic documentaries like “Taiga” (1992); “The Korean Wedding Chest” (2009); and “Under Snow” (2011); and travelogues such as “Paris Calligrammes” (2020). Her films have been invited to film festivals like Cannes, Venice and the Berlinale, and her artistic work has also been exhibited at MoMA in New York; the Cinémathèque Française and the Centre Pompidou, in Paris; the Museo Reina Sofía, in Madrid; and the Berkeley Art Museum.
