A Belgian-Syrian filmmaker and screenwriter, Tawfik Sabouni was born in Damascus in 1989. As a teenager, he decided to pursue filmmaking, but, with no film school in Syria, he ended up studying law instead. When the Syrian revolution began in 2011, Sabouni picked up a camera to film, document, and record what the state sought to erase. He was arrested and imprisoned in Sednaya and, after his release, left the country. In 2015, he arrived in Belgium, where he studied film directing at the Institut National Supérieur des Arts (INSAS) in Brussels. His short films “On the Edge of Madness” (2021) and “Stateless” (2022) have screened at several international film festivals. “The Other Side of the Sun” is his first feature film.
