
South African born writer and filmmaker. He made his feature film debut with “Shirley Adams” (2009), which premiered in competition at the Locarno Film Festival. “Beauty” (2011) had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and won the Queer Palm. In 2015, “The Endless River,” screened at the 39th Mostra, became the first South African film to compete at the Venice Film Festival. “Moffie” (2019) premiered in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival. His next film, “Living” (2022), is his first production outside of South Africa. The film is an English-language remake of “Ikiru” (1952), directed by Akira Kurosawa. It premiered at Sundance and later screened in Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and London, and it was nominated for two Academy Awards.
