Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1973. A filmmaker and producer, his work moves between narrative and experimental cinema. In 2012, he founded the Alternative Film Lab, an initiative dedicated to supporting underground cinema and new filmmakers. Shirvani has built an independent path in response to restrictions and censorship. He directed, among others, the short film “The Circle” (1999), presented at the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival; the documentaries “Where Is Leili?” (2006), “Iranian Cookbook” (2010), presented at the 34th Mostra, and “Telescope” (2011); and the fiction feature films “Navel” (2004) and “Fat Shaker” (2013), winner of the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival and subsequently banned in Iran. His films have also been screened at festivals such as Locarno, FIDMarseille, and Sundance.
