

Born in Shiraz, Iran, in 1973. He graduated in Sociology from Shiraz University and studied Editing at Sooreh University in Tehran. The Mostra presented his feature films “The Twilight” (2002), “Iron Island” (2005), “Goodbye” (2011), for which he received the Best Director award in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival, and “There Is No Evil” (2020), which was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best International Fiction at the 44th Mostra. He also directed “Manuscripts Don’t Burn” (2013), “A Man of Integrity” (2017), which won Best Film in Un Certain Regard, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” (2024), which received the Special Prize in the Cannes competition. Despite this international recognition, none of his feature films have ever been permitted public screening in Iran. After years of confronting censorship and enduring political pressure, Rasoulof was again sentenced in 2024 to eight years in prison and was forced to leave Iran.
