Born in Constantine, Algeria, in 1966, he studied film in Paris and in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Since the 1990s, he has directed documentaries that explore the links between memory, history and politics, together forming a portrait of contemporary Algeria between its colonial legacy and democratic aspirations. They include “Alienations” (2004), awarded at the Cinéma du Réel, “China Is Still Far Away” (2008), “Checks and Balances” (2015), presented at the Locarno Film Festival, and “The Battle of Algiers, a Film Within History” (2017), presented at the IDFA. “The Arab” is his first fiction feature.
