

Born in Fenyang, Shanxi province, China, in 1970, Jia Zhangke is one of the most important filmmakers working today. He directed, among others, the features “Pickpocket” (1997), awarded at the Berlin International Film Festival; “Platform” (2000), awarded at the Venice International Film Festival; “The World” (2004), which received the Critics’ Prize at the 29th Mostra; “Still Life” (2006), winner of the Golden Lion at Venice; “24 City” (2008); “A Touch of Sin” (2013), Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival; a segment of the film “Where Has the Time Gone?” (2017); “Ash Is Purest White” (2018); and “Caught by the Tides” (2024) — all screened at the Mostra. During the 31st Mostra in 2007, the filmmaker came to São Paulo to present a retrospective of his work. At the 38th Mostra in 2014, he was honored with the Leon Cakoff Prize and the launch of a book, an edition that also featured the screening of the documentary “Jia Zhangke, A Guy from Fenyang” by Walter Salles. In 2020, at the 44th Mostra, he designed the event’s poster, in addition to screening the short film “Visit” (2020) and the documentary “Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue” (2020).
