

Born in New York in 1954. An American filmmaker, he became known for intimate portraits of major cultural figures and artistic movements of the late 20th century. Raised in Great Neck, Long Island, Brookner attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Columbia University and later pursued a Master of Arts in art history and film at New York University. During his time at NYU, he began work on a documentary about writer William S. Burroughs, which would become his notable film “Burroughs: The Movie” (1983, 38th Mostra). He then directed “Robert Wilson & the CIVIL warS” (1987) and his only fiction feature, “Bloodhounds of Broadway” (1989). Howard Brookner died in 1989.
