

Born in Tokyo in 1962. His first fiction feature, “Maborosi” (1995), was screened at the 20th Mostra and won the Golden Osella at the Venice Film Festival. He directed films such as “After Life” (1998), “Nobody Knows” (2004), “Hana” (2006), “Still Walking” (2008), “Air Doll” (2009), a segment of the feature “Kaidan Horror Classics” (2010), and “The Third Murder” (2017), all screened at the Mostra. He also made “Like Father, Like Son” (2013), winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the audience award for best international fiction film at the 37th Mostra; and “After the Storm” (2016), winner of the Critics’ Award for best international film at the 40th Mostra. He won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for “Shoplifters” (2018, 42nd Mostra), which was also nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film. He then directed “The Truth” (2019), his first feature made outside Japan; “Broker” (2022), shot in South Korea; and “Monster” (2023), winner of the Queer Palm and the award for best screenplay at Cannes. At the Mostra, he was a member of the international jury at the 31st edition, in 2007, and received the Humanity Award at the 42nd edition, in 2018.
