Cristian Mungiu

Born in Iaşi, Romania, in 1968, Cristian Mungiu is a director, screenwriter, and producer. He studied English literature at the University of Iaşi and film directing at the University of Film in Bucharest. Before moving on to filmmaking, he worked as a writer, journalist, photographer, and teacher. His debut film, “Occident” (2002), premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, his films have been constantly screened and awarded at the French festival, where he presented “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” (2007, 31st Mostra), winner of the Palme d’Or; “Beyond the Hills” (2012, 36th Mostra), awarded Best Screenplay; “Graduation” (2016), winner of the Best Director award; and “R.M.N.” (2022). He also co-directed, wrote, and produced the collective episodic film “Tales from the Golden Age” (2009). Mungiu has served on the juries of prestigious film festivals, including Cannes and Venice.
