It is the early 18th century in England, in the middle of a war with France. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne while her friend lady Sarah governs the country. When Abigail, a new and ambitious servant, arrives she develops a close relationship with the monarch. A growing friendship between the two gets Sarah furious —but Abigail will not let anyone stand in her way.

Winner of Grand Special Jury Prize and of the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Olivia Colman at Venice Film Festival.
