During the 1960’s, thousands of American youngsters travelled to Brazilian Northeast to join the volunteer program Peace Corps. Interviews, archive materials and historical documents show the contradiction between America’s foreign police and the volunteers’ motivations, astonished with the problems of a region characterized by hunger and violence. The military coup in 1964 in Brazil, the Vietnam War, CIA’s infiltration in Latin America complete the context and reveal the fear that the Northeast could become a “new Cuba”.
