1942. Two very different men meet in the dry uplands of Brazil: German Johann, a deserter from World War II, who has taken a job selling a new miraculous drug, aspirin, and Ranulfo, a farmer driven off his land by the drought. Johann engages the services of Ranulfo and together they travel dusty roadways over the Brazilian hinterland in a truck to show a film about the new remedy. Journeying is also an opportunity to share two very different experiences of life. The German, urban and educated, and the illiterate Brazilian more versed in various useful expedients for day-to-day living.
