The controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII`s pontificate, the first American pope. Born Lenny Belardo, he is a complex and conflicted character, with choices bordering on obscurantism, yet full of compassion towards the weak and poor. Pius XIII is a man of great power, stubbornly resistant to the Vatican courtiers, and unconcerned with the implications to his authority.
In celebration of its 40th edition, the Mostra exhibited two titles of Paolo Sorrentino, "One Man Up" (2001), his first feature film, screened at the 25th edition, and his most recent work, the television series "The Young Pope".
