American troops liberate a concentration camp in Germany and transform it to a refugee camp. The liberated prisoners, though, are still not allowed to leave. One of them is a young Pole, Tadeusz. He writes poems and reads zealously, experiencing at the same time a strong psychological and ideological crisis. One day women come to the camp. Tadeusz makes friends with one of them —a young Polish Jew named Nina. The girl encourages him to run away with her.
