Seligman, a lonely man, walks through an alley during a cold winter night and finds a wounded woman on the ground named Joe. He takes her to his apartment, where Joe describes herself as a nymphomaniac and begins telling him the story of her life. Once a teenager, she and a friend compete in a series of sexual games. Young Joe enjoys her sexual freedom and eventually moves into her own apartment, seeing many lovers, but is unable to escape the very first man in her life, Jerôme.
