Set in Lisbon at the end of the 19thcentury, the film follows Carlos Maia, heir to one of the greatest fortunes in Portugal. Wealthy, handsome and intelligent, Maia would like to leave a legacy, something that would make his beloved grandfather proud. However, Carlos also spends his days riding horses, visiting the theater and reading books. When he meets the beautiful Maria Eduarda, a romantic affair begins, but a terrible secret might change their destiny. Based on the novel by Eça de Queirós.
