Bernard, the patriarch in an eccentric family, dreams of becoming a great writer, but is a teacher instead. When Joan, his wife, discovers her own talent for writing, jealousy comes between the couple, forcing both teenaged sons to develop a new form of relationship with their parents. The mother has encounters with her younger son?s coach, and the father begins to date a student his older son would have for a girlfriend. A story with an autobiographical foundation, based on experiences lived in infancy by director Noah Baumbach and his brother.
