The story of first love is set in a period of reform and opening in China that, in many instances, generated conflict between generations. During the sixties, on government recommendation, young Qing leaves home in Shanghai to be transferred to Guizhou province, one of the poorest regions in the country in order to productively occupy unused soil. Her father, however, is anxious to return to Shanghai. To Qing, however, it will be complicated to return, for she has started a romance with Hong, a young man from a local peasant family.
