In 1984, Nikolai, a young 20-year-old Soviet who loves music, girls and his buddies, was sent to do his military service in a country he knew nothing about: Afghanistan. Within a few months, caught in the trap of war, he begins to hate the enemy. Captured by the Mujahideen, his life hangs by a thread. His friendship with a robab player (an Afghan string instrument) saves his life. He gets to know other men. A year and a half later, he is freed, handed over to a French journalist who came to write an article in the Panjshir valley.
